Dave Woods and his wife have been Surrey citizens since 1986. Born and raised in Edmonton, Dave served in the RCMP for 43 years, operating primarily in the Burnaby and Surrey detachments. After serving as the District Commander for Cloverdale/Port Kells for 10 years, Dave retired as the Surrey detachment’s first Staff Sergeant Major.
While at the Surrey detachment, Dave established a Police Community Consultative Group resulting in positive, constructive working relationships and open lines of communication between key community stakeholders, business groups and citizens. He also worked with community groups to establish a much-needed facility for the homeless in Cloverdale.
Dave is a member of the Cloverdale Rotary Club, Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce, Cloverdale Legion, and is the Vice-Chair of the Options Community Services Society Board of Directors. During the course of his career and volunteer work, Dave has been involved with the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association and the Surrey Board of Trade. He also previously served on the Board of Director of Servants Anonymous.
For his efforts in the community, Dave was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Commemorative Medal in 2012, and was named the Police Officer of the Year by the Surrey Board of Trade in 2006.
There are many areas of municipal affairs in Surrey that are of particular interest to Dave. He is primarily concerned about community safety, addressing homelessness, and the operation of unregulated drug recovery houses. Furthermore, he supports recreational development, including the preservation of parkland, and business development, including the continued redevelopment of Surrey’s Central downtown core. He wants to see taxes remain reasonable but realistic; he feels property ownership and facility development are a priority; and he believes that development of new residential areas and business centres will benefit all Surrey residents.
Dave continues to enjoy volunteering in his community, but still makes time for golfing, cycling, and swimming.
