Occupation: Councillor
Key Issues:
- Safer Streets
- Preserving Green Space and Farmland
- Expanded Public Transit
I have been a member of the Council since 1998.
As Chair of the Public Safety Committee, I have been working with the RCMP, firefighters and public safety officers to implement the innovative Crime Reduction Strategy .
We have adopted successful strategies used in other cities in dealing with crime that is putting more police officers on our streets and is addressing issues related to homelessness and addiction.
These new approaches are working for our residents – violent crime is down 20 percent over the past 3 years and 1,254 grow-ops have been shut down in Surrey since 2005.
As we work to create new jobs, we must preserve our farmland and green space and enhance the quality of life for all of our residents. I am committed to creating a more liveable and sustainable city.
We have implemented programs to ensure that we meet our target of 70 percent waste diversion by 2015. Further, Surrey’s new Eco-Centre, a one-stop drop-off facility where residents can deliver recyclable and reusable items, and our new Biofuel Facility which will convert the City’s green and food waste to biofuel, are making Surrey a leader in sustainability.
I serve as the President of the Union of BC municipalities, Chair of the Focus on Seniors and Heritage Advisory Committees, and also serve on the Finance Committee, the Surrey Crime Prevention Society and the Downtown Surrey BIA.
I am a member of the non-partisan Surrey First team.
I have lived in Guildford for 34 years, and have three grown children and a granddaughter.
