Councillor Mary Martin

Occupation:  Councillor
Key Issues:

  • Reducing Crime

  • Parks and Recreation

  • Jobs and New Investment

I have lived in Surrey for over 20 years with my husband Tony and our three grown children.

Since my election to Council in 2005 and as Chair of the Mayor’s Committee on Health Care, I worked hard for the new 94-bed Sobering Centre in Surrey, the first of its kind in the region to provide an entrance point to rehabilitation and new beds for people with addictions.

As Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee, I have supported new community facilities for families in every part of Surrey.  Whether it’s the new recreation centres in Cloverdale, Fraser Heights, Newton, and the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre in Whalley, or the new artificial turf fields at Hjorth Road, Tamanawis and South Surrey Athletic Park, we are investing in state-of-the facilities for our growing community.

I am committed to openness and accountability at City Hall and supported Surrey’s Whistleblower Policy to protect employees who report fraud or abuse at City Hall.  I am also proud of our strong management of taxpayer dollars. The fact that taxes in Surrey are the lowest in Metro Vancouver makes Surrey a great place not only to start and grow a business but also to raise a family.

I Chair the Healthy Community Partnership Committee and serve on the Finance and Public Safety Committees, on the Boards of the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation and I am an Honorary Board Member of the Surrey Hospice Society and a Director of the Semiahmoo House Society.

I am a member of the non-partisan and independent Surrey First team.
